Treatments
The chemotherapeutic substances used are generally formulations of different compounds administered intravenously (by injection into a vein, through a catheter) or into tablets.
Formulations
Distinct chemotherapeutic compounds have different mechanisms and effects on tumors. For this reason, in chemotherapy is common to use two or three substances together to increase the chances of treatment success. These combinations are called formulations.
A pharmaceutical formulation is the specific combination of chemical substances that make a particular drug or treatment.
What formulation is used depends both on the type (pathology) of colorectal cancer and how advanced is the disease. So there are formulations indicated for early-stage cancers still confined to their original place, and others for metastatic cancer, the ones that have already spread to other organs.
The formulations are also adjusted according to the tumor response to treatment, and the patient tolerance to the drugs’ side effects.
