What is the exam?
A mammogram is like an x-ray that captures and records images of the breast on a photographic plate, or in digital form on a computer.
There are 2 X-rays of each breast – one from above and one from the side.
The breast needs to be compressed against the x-ray plate and sometimes this can be a little unconfortable, especially for big breasts, but all finishes very quickly so there is no need to be afraid.
The advantages of detecting a cancer at early stages compensate, largely, this limited pain.
If any nodules or micro calcifications are detected, these need to be further studied by more thorough exams, such as a biopsy.
They might or might not be signs of cancer. But if they are, being detected on time can save your life..
